You are a Masterpiece

As a child growing up I remember a wooden lamp stand that we brought from my homeland of Guyana when we immigrated to Canada. 

It was intricately made from multiple pieces of various colored wood from the rainforest.

The ability of a craftsman to combine all the pieces and carve out a unique creation into something functional and artistic left an impression I can still visualize. 

“For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared ahead of time for us to do.” (Ephesians 2:10, CSB).

Ephesians 2:10 likewise relates to your life as a unique and impressive masterpiece.  Let’s take a closer look at a few key components of this verse:

‘His Workmanship’ - can also be translated as a ‘masterpiece’. God has uniquely designed you and perfectly gifted you. Consider yourself flawless in His sight!  That should lift your spirit.

‘In Christ Jesus’ - You are in Christ and He is also in you.  Let that sink in.  Dwell in His presence.  Operate from a state of rest and free from anxiety.  You are also called to ‘be seated’ with Him in heavenly places (Ephesians 2:6), so you can gain a Kingdom perspective on your life and work.

‘Good works’ - This is any form of work and not just church work or Christian service.  Whatever you do, including your business, do it as unto the Lord. (Colossians 3:23).  Worship God through your work.

‘God prepared ahead of time’ - God already knew you would be doing what you are doing before you were born.  Don’t second guess or doubt that he’s aware of your circumstance.  Commit to the Lord whatever you do, including your work, and he will establish your plans. (Proverbs 16:3)

AI and a Renaissance of Labor

I read a few interesting reports lately that got me thinking about the impact of AI and robotics on the labor market.   

The first article was on the worst college degrees for finding a job in 2025.   While I was not surprised about anthropology being first, I was alerted to seeing both ‘computer engineering’ and ‘computer science’ in the top seven.

Wow, I thought, I remember how in the last few decades these were the most demanding degrees. 

Then I wondered if it’s likely due to the impact of AI.  My suspicion was validated by this article indicating AI Chatbots have reduced programming jobs by as much as 28%!

Another article I came across was on the rapid adoption of AI and robotics in Amazon’s warehouses, stating that “roughly 75% of Amazon's deliveries are now assisted by robotic systems”.  Additional data is presented showing that employees, per facility, are in a noted decline.

My conclusion is a renaissance of labor is underway.

For decades, so-called ‘blue collar’ work was looked down upon as we encouraged high school graduates to pursue a four year education in order to get a ‘white collar’ job.

However, with AI ramping up, many of these white-collar jobs in areas like programming, administration, operations, sales, marketing, accounting and more, are being displaced by AI. 

Job growth is now underway for skilled trades such as plumbers, electricians, HVAC technicians, construction and transportation. 

In addition, jobs that require ‘emotional intelligence’ in healthcare, counseling, and creativity are also growing.  Many of these don’t even require a degree as this report indicates.

“Blessed is everyone who fears the Lord, Who walks in His ways.  When you eat the labor of your hands, You shall be happy, and it shall be well with you.”

‭‭Psalm 128:1-2

Take Action: 

God designed and commissioned humans to work and create with our hands and instructed Adam to do so since the beginning of time. 

What changed? 

Have we come to ignore our original commission?

It appears that the age of AI is bringing about a renaissance period for manual and skilled labor, which will become the envy of workers globally, but especially in the western world.

The Renaissance era during the 15th and 16th centuries produced some of the greatest artisans that poured days, months and even years into creating beauty with their hands.   

It’s now time to rediscover manual work and start creating with our hands again.  We are reminded in Psalm 128 that the labor from our hands produces joy and prosperity.

It may be time to replace our keyboards with a tool, instrument or brush.

Let’s make, create, design and invent.

Let’s not be defined by the color of our collar but rather by our Creator, and what He produces through our hands…..all to the glory of God!

Beyond Bullish and Bearish: Finding Peace in Market Volatility

The market opened red this morning.

Your portfolio is down 3%.

Suddenly, that conversation with your spouse becomes tense, your patience with your children grows thin, and your morning prayer feels distant and distracted. Sound familiar?

As Christian investors, we often fall into the trap of allowing market narratives to dictate not just our investment decisions, but our entire emotional landscape. 

When we're bullish and optimistic about our holdings, we ride high—until that inevitable correction humbles us.

When we're bearish and expecting decline, we live in constant anxiety, and even market gains feel hollow because they contradict our carefully constructed narrative.

This emotional rollercoaster reveals a deeper spiritual issue: we've allowed our investment outcomes to become the barometer for our peace and joy.

Jesus warns us about this very trap in Matthew 6:21: "For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also." When our hearts become too entangled with market movements, we've misplaced our treasure.

The apostle Paul offers a better way in Philippians 4:11-12:

"I have learned to be content whatever the circumstances. I know what it is to be in need, and I know what it is to have plenty. I have learned the secret of being content in any and every situation."

Philippians 4:11-12

Paul's contentment wasn't tied to his circumstances—or in our case, to market performance.

Scripture consistently teaches us that God is our provider, not the market.

In Matthew 6:26, Jesus reminds us to "look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they?"

This doesn't mean we shouldn't invest wisely, but rather that our security shouldn't rest in volatile markets.

Consider adopting a more neutral approach to market movements.

Instead of checking your portfolio first thing in the morning, begin with prayer and Scripture. When you do review your investments, do so with the understanding that you're stewarding resources that ultimately belong to God.

"Do not boast about tomorrow, for you do not know what a day may bring."

Proverbs 27:1

When we align our hearts with God's Kingdom purposes rather than market narratives, we find the peace that transcends understanding—regardless of whether the market closes in the red or green.
